US Religious Police Emerge……as Iran Abolishes it’s….

With some irony it should be noted that Iran under public pressure is deemphasizing and maybe abolishing it’s religious police. Meanwhile in the U.S. our Supreme Court appears to be moving to enforce religious orthodoxy by declaring unlimited rights for believers at the expense of others freedoms.

Medicynical Note: Religious freedom used to include the freedom from religion. Now every “devout” person can be offended by the simple fact of non-believers and discriminate against them. This “right” seemingly has infinite applicability. Next up will be a suit against having to serve those of a different faith; different color; different national origin; who knows?

Sadly a the arbiters of this suit will be a reactionary Supreme Court majority. A majority that follow the beliefs of a religion that in many locales has bankrupted itself paying off victims of it’s priests’ immoral behavior. Ironic? Or Tragic?

Lying Huckster Can Invoke Bankruptcy Protection…. Federal Student Borrowers Can’t

Alex Jones after tormenting the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre was sued for defamation and calling the school shooting (26 victims) a hoax. He owes over a billion dollars.

He apparently can and has filed for bankruptcy debt relief (after allegedly hiding assets). Meanwhile students deeply in debt from college loans, some having been scammed by for profit “institutions” (sic) are barred from this way of satisfying overwhelming debt. Ironic, maybe, but that’s America.

Medicynical Comment: I’m speechless.

Incompetent Policing: Colorado Springs Slaughter

“But the law that allows guns to be removed from people deemed dangerous to themselves or others has seldom been used in the state, particularly in El Paso County, home to Colorado Springs, where the 22-year-old Aldrich allegedly went into Club Q with a long gun just before midnight and opened fire before he was subdued by patrons.’

“”If the justice system had followed through with something, anything … he wouldn’t likely have had access to be able to get a weapon and five people wouldn’t have died,” Bowman said.”

Medicynical Note: Given the dereliction of duty by the Chief of Police and his office I would hope the victims of this preventable massacre force the firing of the chief and obtain massive compensation from the city and county for their loss.

This only happens in the U.S. where guns are cheap and available to anyone; where our police forget the protect part of their duty while cashing their paychecks; where children in school live in fear; where innocents are regularly slaughtered (over 600 mass shootings this year). This happens rarely if ever elsewhere. That’s a fact.

It’s not that we have more mental health problems than elsewhere, it’s not the doors; it’s not the founders (they’d be appalled); in most cases it’s not police incompetence; ITS THE GUNS.

Guns, Fear, Death and Irony in Permitless-Carry America

Supreme Court Justice Alito recently said he felt “threatened by unarmed people as they used their first amendment rights to protest court decisions.

Meanwhile around the U.S. more and more states are implement the court’s permitless-carry rulings and more people around the country openly carry weapons.

Medicynical Note: Parenthetically this is a freedom created by the same conservative Supreme Court justices that now say they live in fear of being shot, in part, because of it.

Police, as a group inexplicably seem to favor all “2nd amendment rights,” including open carry. But ironically or tragically they are one of the groups at greatest risk from this “freedom.”

America leads the industrialized world in police deaths from guns, and people, innocents and perps, being shot by police. We also are the industrial world leaders in all other gun deaths including accidental shootings, mass shootings, school shootings, suicides by guns, armed assaults and robberies.

Each year local governments, pay out millions of dollars to innocents and their survivors and bystanders erroneously shot by police using excess force…..often because they work and live in fear of being shot themselves.

And all this is based on a constitutional amendment and tradition that arguably had it’s origin in slavery and racism. This is American freedom?

Guns, Guns, Guns

In the industrialized world only America equates freedom with gun access and ownership. It’s getting worse thanks to our conservative Supreme Court voiding any restrictions on gun ownership. New rulings complicate the problem even further.

“A judge in West Virginia this month cited the Supreme Court case when he struck down a federal law that required guns to have serial numbers. So did a judge in Texas who ruled last month that people under criminal indictments can still possess guns, and a judge who this month tossed New York’s prohibitions on carrying concealed firearms in Times Square, summer camps, subways and theaters.”

“More than a dozen other challenges to gun control laws are pending in federal courts, which legal experts say could leave holes in efforts to curb gun violence and the use of weapons in crimes.”

Medicynical note: In the U.S. with it’s guns everywhere for everyone policies, police are terrified that their response to the next traffic stop or domestic dispute or any citizen contact will result in a weaponized altercation. They treat everything as if they are at risk. Mistakes are regularly made, innocents as well as officers tragically shot and the public bears the often costly legal and moral ramifications.

The U.S. leads the industrialized world in gun murders, accidental shootings, accidental shooting by children and of children, gun suicides, police shootings, policemen getting shot, mass shootings and school shootings.

And somehow this sick partially demented (IMHO) Supreme Court Majority think this is what the founders intended (for what that’s worth 250 years later).

Guns….My Morning Reads

Medicynical Note: The other fatal epidemic in America. Guns terrify everyone and in the U.S. they are everywhere. A uniquely American problem (we lead the world in ownership and deaths) in a once civil society that absurdly maintains that it values life.

It should also be noted that in the other epidemic the U.S. also leads the world in deaths. What the hell is wrong with us?

Israel’s Absurdity

No irony and no mulligans in the world of nuclear armaments.

But former Israel security officials are increasingly critical of the role Netanyahu played in opposing the original agreement and urging Trump to abandon it. These officials say the accord was imperfect but that the alternative has been worse.”

“This approach enabled “Iran to accumulate a lot more material, work on advanced centrifuges, and maybe other things that we don’t know about, all which brought Iran closer than ever before” to acquiring a nuclear bomb, said Yoel Guzansky, former head of the Iran desk at Israel’s National Security Council and a senior fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS). “The nuclear deal was flawed, but at least it put a lid on Iran’s advancement, which we don’t have now.”’

Medicynical Note: The only country in the Middle East with nuclear weapons accuses Iran of nuclear blackmail for trying to develop it’s own nuclear weapon (denied by Iran).

The shadow world of Middle Eastern intrigue reveals an incompetence a little like MAD Magazine’s spy against spy feature…….except that we are talking real people and real lives at risk.

Liability and Covid…..who bears the costs

I read three articles this morning that raised concerns about liability and COVID. It’s inevitable in a litigious society that this will become an issue.

The first article concerned a State Trooper who died from COVID. It was disclosed that he had not received a COVID vaccination but was at work until he became ill. Who would be liable if they developed COVID after exposure to this guy?

The second article involved public employees in Washington State resisting the mandate for vaccination. Who would be liable if they were allowed to resist the mandate and infected colleagues or others who they met in the course of their work?

The third article points out that the vaccine mandate is working. The vaccine proved to be safe is assuring vital institutions a protected work force going into the third winter of the epidemic. And perhaps more vitally it limits their risk of facing suits regarding negligence if a person was thought to have acquired COVID in a hospital setting.

Medicynical Note: There are strong arguments for vaccination. It is safe and appears to offer almost complete protection against fatal COVID infections. Breakthroughs cases appear to be in the immunocompromised and the debilitated elderly.

With a safe and effective intervention it could be posited that an employer was negligent and liable in allowing customers (patient or other workplace contacts) to be exposed to a sometimes fatal disease. The mandates protect more than the vulnerable individuals, they protect their employers and their contacts.

In a related thought, the insurance industry denies or charges more for insurance coverage for people at increased risk. Perhaps as an another incentive to vaccinate, private and government insurers should provide only limited medical cost coverage to those refusing to protect themselves. As my conservative friends point out there are consequences to bad behavior.

The Endless Morass of Religious Persecution

It opens a window onto a deeply misogynistic culture in Ireland over several decades, with serious and systematic discrimination against women, especially those who gave birth outside of marriage,” he said. “We did this to ourselves as a society.”

“Survivors of the homes say urgent action by the state is needed, and many say the Roman Catholic church, which ran the homes, needs to be held more fully accountable.”

And the Catholic Church features itself as an arbiter of morality.

Medicynical Note: Nothing new here the church has abused and persecuted people on every continent for hundreds of years. Children and women have been their victims–the most vulnerable in societies. It continues today.

But somehow this flawed institution persists. It self-righteously tries to be the arbiter of morality and as such continues to abuse the rights of women and children.

I have no doubt there are good “moral” well meaning people in this organization but its roots are rotten and corrupt. As such it should be discounted as a arbiter of morality.

Black Voters Matter

“A Republican congressional ally of President Trump solicited more than 100 of his fellow GOP lawmakers to sign on to a brief with the Supreme Court in support of a long-shot lawsuit filed by Texas seeking to delay certification of presidential electors in four battleground states won by President-elect Joe Biden.”

Medicynical note: let’s be clear, just as the reaction to recent police shootings says black lives don’t matter, the legal action by republicans against Biden’s election is saying, very loudly, that black voters don’t matter. It’s not subtle.
