Bolsonaro and Trump Birds of A Feather: Brazil’s Functioning Judiciary

In todays Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/08/18/brazil-moraes-judge-trump-bolsonaro/

Medicynical Note: Much like America once, in Brazil a violent attempt to overthrow an election is not freedom of speech. It’s a crime.

Bolsonaro and Trump actively encouraged crowds to attack their respective legislative branches after losing re-election votes and in doing so committed crimes. A crime that in Brazil, still is a crime. It took just six months for Brazil’s constitutional democracy with a functioning judiciary to ban Bolsonaro from running for election for 8 years and he is now being tried for encouraging sedition.

In the U.S. several hundred people were convicted of similar crimes. But here, with the help of a politicized corrupted Judiciary (yes it really happened here), Trump was never brought to court for his crimes. He ran again for President and somehow was elected. It turns out to be the most remarkably self-destructive error by the American public in history.

Everyone convicted of violence and breaking into our congress has now been freed and pardoned. Trump is rapidly moving the U.S. towards an executive branch with unlimited power and my guess in the next year he will move to corrupt our elections. America’s future, unless of course you are a Bezos columnist, is under threat.

Brazil’s judiciary on the other hand held firm and is holding Bolsonaro accountable I hope they and the Brazilian government withstand the inevitable attempt by our CIA and our military reverse their progress.

Pope Donald and the Pedophile

Forgive my comparison but the Trump administration is a little like the Catholic Church which spent years trying to bury it’s pedophilia problem. First irate denials, then pay off the victims and hide the perp(s) —Epstein to jail and alleged suicide, Maxwell to jail. And then rope-a-dope legal maneuvers to protect Epsteins’s very close friends. And of course then try to change the subject and forget about it, though the church doing the same arguably lost a pope in fallout from the scandal.

One would wonder whether the so very religious (sic) evangelical leaders and our politically bent legal system has room for a dear friend (at one time) of a well known pedophile as our supreme leader was/is or will they do the right thing. Don’t hold your breath waiting for guys like Franklin Graham, they really don’t care about anything but money and power. They have a lot in common with you know who.

Medicynical Note: The Republican Party as such no longer exists so expect nothing from them. Our once independent Department of Justice is under the close scrutiny of Epstein’s friend and led by a sad excuse of an Attorney General.

I’d get out the popcorn but the situation is too fraught with risk to our democracy and the lives of law abiding citizens to get much pleasure out of the chaos.

American Rules: Heads I win Tails you lose–All Supreme Court Approved–Illegals and African Americans

American capitalism exploits, whether it’s power over a group of people or an advantage over a competitor, the bottom line is gaining value (power or wealth). We like to say we need competition in order for capitalism to work and for progress to occur, but deep down the goal of every capitalist is monopoly. We see it in businesses, and we see it in our social hierarchy and we see it in politicians. What’s his name, the current President, for example, in his quest for political monopoly sensed that America’s racial history could be used to an advantage and in his psychopath’s mind, rules and civility don’t apply.

It’s a fact that what’s his name has had racist views all his adult life. And in his quest for power he hasn’t hesitated to use them to divide America. Historically, white America, a very very law abiding country, used laws to legalize slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, and even ignore lynchings to give the majority white population preference and advantage in every aspect of American life. White preference was law for 350 years dominating education, housing, property ownership, policing, wealth…almost everything. It was all legal and Supreme Court approved. It was the law of the land.

Then, when a Supreme Court, not the current one of course, declared the inequities illegal those same Americans ironically posited that any preference given disadvantaged African-Americans is illegal because after all we are all equal under the law and any racial preference is racism. It’s a little like running a 350 year marathon with one group carrying 25 lb weights on their back. At the end when that group is way behind in every measurable aspect of life, those in the lead make believe that it was a fair race.

Our President and the very very legalistic no-longer-Supreme……. Court declared that suddenly like magic, all is good, no need to equalize the race(ers)–no affirmative action, erase the history of slavery and segregation because it might make white people feel bad about what they did in the past. All traces gone. Think of it as a melding of American racism to capitalism. Monopoly is good but only if it’s all white.

In a similar vein for the last 100 years or so America allowed and in many areas encouraged immigrants to enter the country legally and illegally. Jobs were provided; children born of these immigrants became citizens; education was provided and almost all became welcome members of their communities. Businesses benefited. These so-called illegals did the hard work of harvesting crops, working in the construction industry and doing some of the dirty work of American businesses. Laws were ignored because, you know, money. It was all legal…..ish.

Then quite suddenly America decided the purity of it’s European ancestry was threatened by all of these off-white illegals and a President was elected whose life-long hatred of non-white people extended his hatred to immigrants. His hate filled description of them as criminals, murderers and as people who eat the pets of real Americans was one key to his election. He promised to remove the several million “illegals” from our shores. In his hatred he refused to recognize asylum seekers, due process, families that have lived here for generations, rights for children brought here as infants and small children, or even the rights of citizenship for those born here.

He maintains we must follow the law as he interprets it. These immigrants came in illegally and despite our (wink wink) use of their labor and the generations of living here they must go. He maintains they broke our laws (albeit with the tacit approval of our government) and must be punished by being forced to leave. All because you know we are so very concerned about legality.

Medicynic Note: In America it’s heads I win tails you lose. No matter how the law was interpreted or implemented in the past whether manipulated to deny rights to minority populations or to facilitate the hiring and use of “illegal” immigrants for generations, all it takes is a flip of the Supreme Court or the mood of a madman and white socio-economic supremacy is assured. And of course we cannot offer any compensatory means to access legalized status on one hand or education, wealth, property and power on the other.

It’s the American way.

Trump: Animal Farm, 1984, and Strangelove Revisited

Somehow as this unfolds I ruminate on Orwell’s “Animal Farm”, “1984”, and Kubrick’s”Dr. Strangelove (a movie in case younger folks are unaware of it).

DOGE comes directly out of 1984..–“Department of Government Efficiency” it sounds a little like “The Ministries of Truth, Love, Plenty, and Peace”– maybe next week they will show up.

Our legal system’s regression reminds me of Animal Farm’s “All Animals Are Equal but Some Animals Are More Equal Than Others” except that I replace the animal reference with pigs as it’s more descriptive of now.

And lastly Strangelove with Musk’s “sieg heil” reminding me of Strangelove’s (Peter Sellers) abortive but clearly similar genuflection to Hitler. And Trump yesterday deciding to take over Gaza is a little like Gen. Buck Turgidson (George C. Scott) launching a nuclear war on a whim. The ineffectual resistance from Repubs and Dems is a little like Capt. Lionel Mandrake’s (also Peter Sellers) futile attempt to stop the war. But now, in addition to annihilating a people the goal is to make money by privatizing the occupation. A little like Keenan Wynn’s “Bat Guano” and his reverence for and defense of the private property of the Coca Cola company.

Very eerie times.

Liberia Makes the U.S. into a Banana Republic

Liberian President George Weah has been hailed for his sportsmanship for conceding to his rival in the presidential race – from across the political divide and the region.

Medicynical Note: Meanwhile in the U.S. our former President and current, oh so very devout, Speaker of the House continue to refuse to say that he lost the last election. This, despite the fact that he lost by several million votes; despite the fact that he also convincingly lost the electoral count; despite the fact that his attempted coup d’etat failed; and despite that fact that he lost over 60 cases in various courts contesting the election.

And that former president despite the fact that a Colorado Court recently ruled that he led an insurrection against the government of the United States is not in jail and is running again for the presidency.

What is more Banana Republic/Third World than that! (Apologies to all Third World nations)

America’s Descent into Chaos: Guilty of Insurrection…….. or Not?

Wikipedia notes that in the United States “Equality before the law, also known as equality under the law, equality in the eyes of the law, legal equality, or legal egalitarianism, is the principle that all people must be equally protected by the law.[1] The principle requires a systematic rule of law that observes due process to provide equal justice, and requires equal protection ensuring that no individual nor group of individuals be privileged over others by the law.”

In reference to the recent Colorado decision on Trump’s participation in the January 6th attempt to overthrow the election the judge “allowed Donald Trump to remain on the ballot in the state’s election next year, but found that he “engaged in insurrection” by sparking the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by his supporters.”

The ruling from Judge “rejects a bid by a group of Colorado voters to disqualify Trump under a rarely used amendment to the U.S. Constitution that bars officials who have engaged in “insurrection” from holding federal office.”

“The judge found that, as president, Trump was not “an officer of the United States” that could be disqualified under the amendment.”

Medicynical Noter: This ruling is certain to be appealed but remember Trump is the guy who once said in 2016 “I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters.”

On January 6th 2021 he stood in the middle of the Capital Mall and actually did his best to shoot his Vice President (verbally at least) and skewer the constitution. So far he’s getting away with it thanks to a politicized legal system which is paralyzed by money, infinite motions, and biased compromised judges even at the highest level.

One would think that no one is above the law. Maybe, but apparently not now in the United States. Kind of pathetic.
