America’s history of racism is long and clear and manifest in our history and laws.
It was legal of course to take the lands from native Americans because our early government surveys showed there was no record of land ownership so it was all right to just take the land, no questions asked. It was the American way, nice and legal—like.
But of course everything we do is always nice and legal, and Supreme Court approved. It was legal for 350 years, for example, to discriminate against African Americans. In every aspect of life there was discrimination. And now of course there is nothing legal that can be done to correct the disparities of those 350 years, also Supreme Court approved. It’s even illegal in some areas to teach the history of slavery, JIm Crow, segregation and the exclusion of African Americans from access to education, healthcare, property ownership, wealth. It’s also “illegal” for universities to give any slight advantage and diversify their student body by including some of these disadvantaged people–but providing advantage to legacy scions of the wealthy at universities is legal……It’s the American way.
And of course we now have all these illegal immigrants living here. Many of these folks have been here for generations. Many married to “real” citizens, many with American “citizen” children, all paying taxes and almost all working. Some, came here seeking asylum and have been following all the rules. Some came here after Afghanistan, they were people who supported our troops during that war and would be under threat by the Taliban if they stayed. Others maybe a majority, have been trying to adjust their status and become full citizens and have been jumping through the obscure hoops and weird road to citizenship and are obeying all the laws, appearing when asked at immigration courts. But now on the whim of an addled racist old man they all have been arbitrarily declared illegal and undesirable and violently attacked on our streets and disappeared without recourse.
And it’s all legal with the Supreme Court seal of approval because, it’s the American way.
In America for some it’s heads I win tails you lose. It’s the American way.
